The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
