Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
